Our bikes have always been about amplifying fun, so our goal for the Heckler MX was to make something light and agile that can help you on-site blind terrain. A mixed-wheel bike gives the confidence of a 29-inch wheel up front for traction and roll-over when you're caught off guard by technical features. All this means it's even more capable of tackling longer, tougher rides. The 27.5-inch wheels keep the bike playful and maneuverable in order to make the most of the trail. The slack head angle (65.5-degree) and 445mm chainstay length provide a snappy and fun feel while still providing traction for when the trail gets steep and technical, both up and down. Like all Santa Cruz bikes, the Heckler pedals well regardless of watts involved. The 160mm-travel fork is paired with 150mm-travel at the rear to provide a wide range of capabilities. We tweaked the VPP kinematics to have slightly lower anti-squat than other bikes. This adds a touch more support and traction over rough stuff when pedaling seated—a major advantage of having the pedal-assist on your side. And like every Santa Cruz bike, the Heckler is built for the rigors of true mountain biking. And sure, some have tried to make their 'cross bikes more "road-capable" (whatever that means), and others have made their road bikes more "adventure-ready," but we created one bike that makes no compromises between the two. The S-Works Diverge redefines the possibilities for adventure on a drop-bar bike. The Diverge is more capable than ever. And with the constant goal to best meet your needs, we took your number one request into account—tire clearance. The new frame will comfortably fit up to 700 x 42mm tires or 650b x 47mm tires. Along with tire clearance, weight was a large factor in the development and, taking some design cues from the development of the Roubaix, we developed a sub-900-gram FACT 11r carbon frame that's one of the lightest in the category. Actually, it's pretty damn light, even if your intent was more Polka Dot Jersey than hunter's plaid flannel. Next up, we moved away from a traditional 'cross geometry, instead opting for something that hasn't been seen before—our Open Road Geometry. You can think of it as a road version of modern trail bike geometry. It provides playful handling and predictable steering for endless dirt skids and mid-corner drifts. The geo features a bottom bracket that's over a half-centimeter lower than the previous Diverge, a slacked-out head tube angle, short chainstays, and a short wheelbase. These changes make for a bike that's not only fun in the dirt but also performs well on the road. And while riding gravel and dirt roads on a road bike may add to the adventure, there's only so much that wider tires with lower pressures can absorb, in terms of bumps. With this in mind, we implemented a new version of our Future Shock into the Diverge design. It not only soaks up bumps with ease but also adds the benefit of extremely predictable handling. That's because the wheelbase isn't lengthening when you hit a bump, so the front end of the Diverge keeps the same effective head tube angle. In other words, when you dive hard into a turn, you won't be surprised by under-steer or sloppy handling. The directive from Team Sky was simple: 'the same, but faster.' That was the spark that led to the Pinarello Dogma F8. The Dogma 65.1, the bike that won just about all there was to win in 2013, wasn't good enough for them. As a team, the most fearsom Grand Tour squad on the planet, they look for gains wherever they can be found, and hope that if they improve everything, even if it's just a little bit here and there, it will add up to real, race-winning differences. 'Same, but faster' could be confounding to a company that prides itself on making bikes for the best in the world and an incredible success record over the years. But Pinarello embraced the challenge. Sky sweetened the pot by enlisting their sponsor Jaguar Land Rover, which provides not only cars to the team but wind-tunnel expertise. Pinarello decided to keep the 65.1's geometry, which has been proven over the years, and is the foundation for a great ride. Everything else was on the table. Jaguar helped design the tube shapes, finding what worked, and what worked better. Just about every frame tube was tweaked in some fashion. The fork legs splay out a bit wider for better aerodynamics. The fork crown helps smooth the airflow around the front brake. The head tube has a more pronounced nose, though still within the UCI's 3:1 ratio. The top tube was flattened. The down tube and seat tube and seat post were changed to what Pinarello is calling a "flatback profile." It's a truncated airfoil that tricks the wind into thinking the tube is longer than it is. The seat stay attaches to the seat tube at a lower point, and the monostay top is shaped to shroud the rear brake. The seat post clamp was integrated into the frame and the fixing mechanism hidden from the wind. Even the enormously popular Onda wavy stays and fork have been refined to simpler, more aero curves. Bottle cage placement was even investigated. The result is 3Xair bolts on the seat tube. There are cage bolts. Use the middle and lower for better aerodynamics and better weight positioning. Use the upper and middle if you want to reach the bottle easier. The shaping wasn't the only change. The shapes have a second purpose; increasing rigidity to improve pedaling efficiency. In many cases, the new shapes meant less material and structures better able to resist torsional forces. The carbon lay-up had been modified as well. Highlighting the changes is Pinarello's use of Torayca's T1100 1K carbon, which helps reduce weight and increase stiffness further. The improvements continue beyond the realm of the theoretical to the practical. Knowing that some riders utilizing electronic shifting like to slam their stems, the top of the head tube has been re shaped to better accommodate electronic junction boxes. The Think2 mechanical/electronic internal routing has been kept, with smoother refinement of the ports, including an exit port on the right rear dropout. If the bike is set up for electronics, the battery hides from the wind in the seat post. The front derailleur hanger is removable. This is both in case it gets damaged and for people looking to lighten their ride as much as possible if they're setting up for a demanding hill climb. After all these improvements, the question should be, "is it faster?" The answer is a resounding "yes." The frameset is 120g lighter in the 54cm size. It measures 12% stiffer overall, with 47% less aerodynamic impact. The fork works as a sail in certain wind conditions. The frame and fork together have 47% less drag than the previous Dogma, and come close to Pinarello's Bolide time trial frame. It's also 16% more balanced. Balanced. Remember Pinarello's embrace of asymmetry? It is still present, but more refined. As a result, the asymmetries they build in better counteract the pedaling forces on the frame. And out on the road, the bike provides a more lively ride. As with earlier Dogma's, the F8 comes with a tapered 1-1/8" to 1-1/2" steerer. The bottom bracket is Italian-threaded. The included seat post is 300mm long and is secured via two 2.5mm Allen-head bolts behind the frame. It can be packed with Shimano's Di2 internal battery, Campagnolo's EPS V2 battery, or left empty. The dropouts are carbon-fiber for light weight. Though the publicity that a brand gets through sponsoring a team should be helpful, in cycling that is not always the case. Nevertheless, the Pinarello Dogma F12, which must have been in the design phase for months going on years, should not be penalized because it has been launched at the same time as the main team it sponsors gets rebranded. It is in fact the latest addition in a long line of the Italian brand’s attempt to make the best possible bikes by finding that perfect mix of attributes. The fact that Pinarello have stuck with the Dogma nomenclature indicates that this is an evolution of the already spectacular F10, and even the F8 before it. They haven’t reinvented the wheel here, mainly because they didn’t have to. The past several versions of the Dogma F series have been so good that it must be a real problem for the designers to think of where to go next. But who are we kidding? This is the cycling industry, and there are always little improvements that can be made even to the best products. Lighter, stiffer, faster is the name of the game, and that is exactly what the F12 gives us. Made from the Carbon Torayca T1100 1K Dream Carbon with Nanoalloy Technology that also formed the building blocks for the F10, Pinarello has refined the layering and neatened up the internals of the tubing in order to save weight and be even more efficient with the materials they use. You’ll also notice that the tube shapes and profiles are different from previous members of the F series. They have done that largely in a bid to make the frame more aero. Their success is evident in the claim that they have managed to reduce drag by 7.3%, which translates into a saving of 8 watts at 40kmh, as compared to the F10. Now, most of us can admit without shame that the amount of time we spend in our rides at or above the 40km/h threshold is probably less than we would ideally like. And certainly less than Chris Froome. But that doesn’t mean that these sorts of improvements are wasted on us. Something else we will likely notice is how they make the frame so aero, as well as increase the stiffness compared to the F10, and still allow it to be as comfortable as it is. Though the level of segmentation in the frame market is severe, there would be no need for you to buy an “endurance bike” for longer rides, since the F12 is comfortable enough to be your steed for any ride of any length. Additional design improvements come in the form of the internal cable routing that the new and improved Most cockpit. In fact, Pinarello designers took some very special care when developing the handlebar and headset interface in order to clean up that very important area in terms of aerodynamics. Integrating the cables and routing them through the bars and headset down to the brakes and gears improves not only the aerodynamics, but the functionality of the cable and the number of brake and gear combinations. And this new Most Ultra Talon sheds a lot of weight while increasing stiffness and enhancing aerodynamics. The other noteworthy change for the F12 compared to the F10 is that now the frame has been designed to accommodate 28mm tires – and according to Pinarello, it can technically take even wider tires, though that would compromise the ISO 4210 standard. If you have tried putting 28mm tires on your Dogma 65.1 only to find that it was rubbing the interior of the fork crown and the rear monostay, then you will be super happy that the F12 will now be able to work with the rubber size of your preference. Of all the improvements, from the energy saving aerodynamics to the hammerable lateral stiffness, this wider tire capability might be the update that you will notice and appreciate most. Similarly, for the rim brake version of the bike, they have changed from single-bolt brakes to a direct-mount, increasing the braking capabilities.

Featuring our lower-link mounted shock design, updated, adjustable geometry, this "Engineering Best Of..." assembles some of our biggest design pleasers into one belter of a road-trip companion. The Hightower has been a does-it-all-well trail bike since its inception. More maneuverable than its longer-travel sibling, the Megatower, and more at home in the steep-and-chunky than its snappy cousin Tallboy, Hightower excels when the route covers 'all points in between,' and descents come courtesy of some big-ass climbs. The VPP suspension's lower-link-mounted shock creates a nearly linear leverage curve, meaning it mops up bumps of all sizes and maintains the kind of progressivity normally reserved for our V10 DH bike! 145mm of rear travel complemented by a 150mm front end gives Hightower just a bit more front and rear travel over the first generation model. Combined with a slacker 65-degree head tube angle, the Hightower still sits squarely in the Goldilocks zone, but with a touch more "Oh sh*t, get me out of here" capability when the porridge gets too hot! Balancing stiffness and weight savings in all the right places is a hallmark of all Santa Cruz carbon frames, and the Hightower flies the flag yet higher. The advanced composite chassis tracks well across all trail surfaces, holds a line, and is reactive to rider directions while isolating pedal-influenced inputs. The Hightower also has a bonus disc to heighten the experience: the flip chip. In the High setting, the BB height is a little higher for those tricky tech trails and/or when Plus sized tires are required.
