In the 1950s, a textile worker whose son raced on the Japanese national cycling team began designing his own cycling kit based on Italian designs. He used the best materials he could find, studying how they worked on a body in motion. In the decades since, PEARL iZUMi has created cycling apparel designed to improve the riding experience of every kind of rider.

Incremental Improvements

Over the last 60 years PEARL iZUMi has never stopped pushing the envelope in search of building greater products. The philosophy of Kaizen was encouraged by the founder - that small daily improvements, create large, impactful changes over time. This philosophy is inherent in PEARL iZUMi's apparel innovations, from the development of sublimated jerseys to designing mountain bike specific apparel and the introduction of synthetic chamois to bike shorts.

True Fluorescent Colors

Screaming yellow was introduced in the 1990s to increase visibility and safety for cyclists on the road. These fluorescent dyes make colors 200-300% brighter than white, helping riders stand out from the background and and about five times more noticeable than other colors. In that era, PEARL iZUMi sponsored the Coors Light pro cycling team, creating a highly visible cycling kit - worn by our own staff member (on left)!
